Buying - Moving Tips - 1-2 Weeks Before


Everyone is excited. Reinforce the positive things about the move. Keep the mood high, eat out, play music, get extra snacks and have them handy.

Talk to your youngest kids and ensure that they are ok. Don’t forget the older kids, they have friends that they don’t want to leave behind. Reinforce that they can go visit them, email them, phone them and can talk with them.

  • Give away or trash anything not sold at moving sale.
  • Request packing boxes from movers for items you plan on packing yourself.
  • Service car, change oil
  • Return borrowed items
  • Get loaned items back.
  • Return library books
  • Cancel Library cards
  • Pick up any items at dry cleaner and/or Laundromat
  • Cancel any unnecessary insurance, obtain coverage on new home
  • Transfer bank accounts

Be sure not to let one person get overloaded; break up activities. Split responsibilities, but follow up to ensure that things are accomplished.

  • Pack a travel kit for critical items like medicines, passports, IDs, personal phones, personal care items, contact numbers, first aid kit, games for the kids.
  • Arrange for baby sitting for younger kids on “Moving Day”
  • Empty any secret hiding places
  • Make sure animals are up-to-date on shots as required by new county.
  • Close out safe-deposit box.
  • Settle any bills incurred on old property.
  • Drain all oil / gas out of motorized equipment.
  • Give away plants not to be moved
  • Give away animals not to be moved – i.e. aquarium/pond fish
  • Confirm all travel arrangements
  • Contact new utility companies and verify start dates.
  • Arrange for someone to watch pets on moving day.
